The University of Northern Colorado women’s swimming and diving team announced on Thursday, 9 March, that Caymanian standout Kyra Rabess has confirmed she will be joining freshman class for the fall term.
Rabess, 18, will study psychology while continuing her swimming career alongside fellow Caymanian swimmers Sarah and Alison Jackson, who are on the UNC Bears team.
“I’m very happy with my decision as I know the school’s swim team is amazing as well as their coaching staff,” Rabess told the Compass. “To be able to not stress about finances was another big thing for me, as well as diversity which is exactly what this team has.”
Rabess, an inaugural Caribbean Games gold medallist and multiple national record holder, hopes to continue to break records in her key events, the 400 metre and 800m freestyle, during her time at UNC.
“My main goal is to get faster,” she said. “Hopefully, [I can] break some records as well as win/place at their conference.”
Once Rabess completes university, she hopes to return home to give back to the next generation of swimmers.
“My plans are to study psychology, which would lead to sports psychology, so that I can come back and help the young upcoming athletes to become the best athletes they can be,” she said.
