One Dog at a Time (ODAAT) is a foster-based group that rescues dogs from the Department of Agriculture pound as well as strays on the streets. The group began its work in late 2013, gaining non-profit status in 2017.
“We have a board of directors who plan fundraisers, run the volunteer thrift shop, manage the funds raised and the dogs and puppies rescued,” says Paula Wythe of ODAAT. “All board members have their own areas of expertise in order to keep the charity running.”
Nearly 1,500 dogs have been adopted since the rescue group’s inception. Last year, it rescued 379 dogs and, as of the end of January 2023, it already rescued 29 canines.
“2022 was by far the busiest year for us,” says Paula. “It is so sad that there is so much need.”
ODAAT raises funds through donations and charity events. Money goes towards spay and neuter procedures, medical care and pet supplies.
Funds also pay for dogs to be flown to rescue partners in the US and Canada. Its greatest needs include funds for vet bills, food for the dogs, foster parents and flight escorts to Miami and Tampa, flying Cayman Airways.
“Corporate sponsorship would really take the pressure off as well as businesses sponsoring events like the One Dog boat trip,” says Paula. “This year is our 10th anniversary so we are working on plans for a big celebration if we can get support to make this happen.”
ODAAT holds a monthly fundraising event, with its Christmas and Easter raffles two of its biggest fundraisers. It also raises funds through its thrift shop and Stingray City boat trips, held twice a year. Rising prices on-island have nearly doubled the cost of the excursions.
“We have to think creatively to raise funds and are working harder than ever to cover the costs,” says Paula. “We are most grateful for the support from the community as we can’t rescue without this financial support.”
People can help by sponsoring the cost of a dog to be released from the Department of Agriculture, fostering a dog, donating dog food and pet supplies, volunteering, donating clothing and goods to its thrift shop and attending its events – or organising one.
“Even if younger members of the community can do a lemonade stand or a bake sale, every dollar makes a difference to us,” says Paula. “We have 6,000 Facebook supports so if every supporter donated $1 a month that would cover half our vet bills each month, which would really help.”
Those looking to foster or adopt a dog can contact the organisation, which will help find a match.
