Cayman continues to collect medals at CARIFTA events. After the swimmers earned a trolley of silverware Saturday, the track and fielders joined the medal parade.
Caymanian sprinter Davonte Howell pulled off a historic 100-metre win on the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in the Bahamas, on Saturday, 8 April.
Howell ran 10.30 seconds to claim gold ahead of the Bahamian duo Carlos Brown and Adam Musgrove for the boys under-20.
It’s the first time a Caymanian has earned a medal in a CARIFTA 100m dash since Kemar Hyman’s bronze in 2007.
National coach Kenrick Williams, who is in the Bahamas, told the Compass on a phone call that Howell’s win is “massive for Cayman”.
In the boys U20 long jump, Cayman’s Andrew Stone took home gold.
It’s the second straight year Stone won gold in that event, making him the only person outside of Kareem Streete-Thompson to win back to back for Cayman at the CARIFTA Games.
In the U17, Anthony Chin Jr leaped of 6.48m, enough, for a bronze medal.
