Over the last month, the Cayman Compass has taken a deep dive into the case of Travis Webb and some of the issues his story raises for the jurisdictions mental health infrastructure.
To accompany our feature-length article on Webb – a former athlete detained indefinitely on a hospital ward – Compass journalists Andrel Harris and James Whittaker produced a short video documentary.
Featuring an interview with Webb, recorded during a brief, supervised release from the hospital, the mini-documentary attempts to piece together the morally complex story of his mental deterioration and the shocking incident that led to him being charged with attempted murder.
Webb, who was found ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ following charges that he tried to bury a child, is asking the Governor and the Cayman community to give him a ‘second chance’.
We also spoke to his doctor, his lawyer and members of his family in a story that offers a window into the struggles Cayman faces when mental health and criminal justice challenges intersect.
