The Central Caribbean Marine Institute will be holding a series of presentations, from above and beneath the waves, in the coming weeks which focus on Cayman’s coral reefs.

The first two, on Wednesday, 24 May, and on Friday, 2 June, are part of CCMI’s Reefs Go Live series, when scientists hold their ‘seminars’ underwater, relaying their information and observations via audio and visual technology to those on land.

The 24 May presentation is themed ‘Adaptation on Coral Reefs’, while the 2 June event focuses on ‘Reef Resiliency and Restoration’. Both can be viewed live online from 10am to 10:45am.

On Monday, 5 June, CCMI’s director of research and education, Dr. Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley, will present a reef lecture on ‘Impacts of isolation and protection: exploring long-term trends in coral community structure on Little Cayman Island’ at 6-7pm at Ambassadors of the Environment at the The Ritz-Carlton on Grand Cayman.

CCMI researchers have been monitoring reef community structure on an annual basis since 1999 on Little Cayman, tracking coral cover, diversity, colony size and species composition, as well as the density, biomass, and diversity of fish assemblages.

Goodbody-Gringley, in her presentation, will speak on what CCMI’s long-running monitoring efforts have revealed about the health and resiliency of the coral reefs. To register, click here.

Then, on Thursday, 8 June, which is World Ocean Day, CCMI will hold a special Reefs Go Live event at the Camana Bay Cinema at 10-10:40am, which explores ’25 Years of Coral Reef Research with CCMI’. This can also be viewed online.

The event is open to everyone, and school groups and classes are welcome to register to attend.

All four events are free.
