Gearing up for Cayman Art Week

It’s that time of year again when the spotlight falls on Cayman’s incredibly wide range of artistic talents – Cayman Art Week.

More than 40 events will be held across all three islands over five days, with many galleries, studios and pop-up exhibitions opening their doors daily to lovers of all art genres.

Each day will focus on a different district with special events, and hop-on/hop-off buses making it easy to visit multiple venues.

The formal opening be held on the evening on 30 May with a Collectors Preview, an invitation-only event at Camana Bay.

Art lovers will be able to take a hop-on, hop-off bus to the many galleries on Grand Cayman, like the Kay Smith Gallery and Studio in Breakers.

CAW West – Thursday, 1 June

First up is the Seven Mile Beach corridor with buses running on a loop between 6pm and 9pm. Use the Cayman Art Week map (downloadable on the CAW website from 25 May) to make your own way or jump on one of the free buses.

Featured artists and venues include Carlos V. Garcia Gallery at The Grove; The ‘Eye Spectrum’ exhibition at Optique; Zhenya Xia at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa; The Gallery at The Ritz-Carlton; Kennedy Gallery; Paperman’s at The Strand; Jason Kennedy Studio; and the ‘side-by-side’ pop-up exhibition at Camana Bay, as well as the Visual Arts Society (at the former Margaritaville on West Bay Road).

CAW Central/Art in the City – Friday, 2 June

Once again, Cayman Art Week is teaming up with George Town Revitalisation for a fun-packed evening in the centre of George Town, kicking off with happy hour drinks, live music and food trucks from 5pm on Cardinall Avenue.

Use the CAW map to take a walking tour or jump on one of the free buses with a CAW guide on board circulating between 6pm and 9pm.

Some of the George Town hot spots include Al Ebanks Studio; 3 Girls And A Kiln; Guy Harvey Gallery; Claire at the Beach Studio; Sandon Feat Gallery; Island House Gallery; Hello World pop-up exhibition, with artists such as Heather Holt, Morgan Olley and Stoak’d; the art collection at Cricket Square; “On Our Block” street art and fashion show with Jawara Alleyne and Josh Pearl; and the Wall of History Walking Tour with John Broad.

The Cayman Islands National Museum will also be open with late-night access to its exhibitions.

CAW East – Saturday, 3 June

Curated bus tours leave the National Gallery at 10am, returning at 3pm on Saturday, 3 June, to head out to the eastern districts. Reservations are required; tickets cost $10 and can be booked online at Eventpro from 23 May.

People can also make their own way to any venues on the tour route.

CAW East visits Awardart Gallery; Pure Art; Scott Swing Gallery; Minds Eye Centre at Miss Lassie’s Cottage in South Sound; White Dog Studio; Kay Smith Studio in Breakers; the Visual Arts Society studio at Pedro St. James; and Artisan Metal Works in Industrial Park.

CAW Sister Islands, 31 May-2 June

Cayman Art Week is also coming to the Sister Islands.

CAW23 kicks off in Cayman Brac on Wednesday, 31 May, with a launch event at Gordon Solomon Studio, and Simone’s Art Gallery will be open daily throughout the week.

In Little Cayman, the Seahorse Boutique and Gallery will have an exhibition of local artists and will be hosting a special drop-in morning on Friday, 2 June, with complimentary coffee and pastries.

Art lovers are also invited to visit Debbie Truchan’s open studio, D’Art of Living, and an art exhibition by the National Gallery at the Little Cayman Museum.

Meanwhile, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is launching its third Cayman Islands Biennial Exhibition during Cayman Art Week. Opening to the public on 1 June, ‘Conversations with the Past – In the Present Tense’ explores the nature of Caymanian culture featuring work by more than 40 local artists across multiple venues.

Cayman Art Week is not just an introduction to the islands’ artists, it’s also a chance to buy a piece of art for yourself. Last year, visitors to CAW events bought more than $200,000 worth of art from local artists and galleries.
