The Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association has announced the teams heading to the Central American and Caribbean Games, and Island Games.
Kyra Rabess and Connor MacDonald will be the two swimmers competing at the CAC Games, scheduled for 23 June-8 July, in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Jacky Pellerin, CIASA technical director, told the Compass that he is looking forward to seeing several new national records set during the meet, with the onus particularly on Rabess.
“Kyra has improved a lot,” he said. “With swimming, you never know what they will produce, but I think Kyra is tapering, so I have high expectations for her. Getting a medal may be difficult, but finals for sure and a national record.”
When asked why only two athletes were going to the CAC Games, Pellerin said there were several issues with taking a full contingent including some athletes needing to sit final exams in school.
However, the Island Games, being held from 8-14 July in Guernsey, will have 12 athletes representing Cayman, including Rabess.
Joining her will be sisters Alison and Sarah Jackson, Sabine Ellison, Veronika Fankina, Elana Sinclair, Allyson Belfonte, Kaitlyn Sullivan, Will Sellars, Thomas Ferguson, Jake Bailey and Aidan Van Der Touw.
While many Cayman athletes may not make the podium for these events, Pellerin said it is a process that will enable them to do so in the future.
“Something that people must consider is that this is the first step to medals, and finals,” he said, noting that having a national record is a massive accomplishment for those who can achieve it.
Following the Island Games, CIASA will turn its attention to the FINA World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, from 14-30 July.
