Brown, Gordon close out collegiate track season

Caymanian track-and-fielders Rasheem Brown and Louis Gordon ended their 2023 collegiate competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held 7-10 June in Austin, Texas.

Both athletes had previously qualified for the event in May during the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Florida.

For Brown, 23, a senior at the University of Tennessee, it was his last time competing as a university student, but it was a journey he was grateful for, he told the Compass.

“It’s been [a] long season,” Brown said. “I’m not satisfied with [my] performance but grateful for the opportunity to compete once more at a high level to close off my collegiate career.”

The NCAA Division I Championships are considered to be the biggest university competition in the United States – where the best athletes are on display.

While Brown did not medal in the 110-metre hurdles, he qualified for the finals, besting 16 other athletes. He placed eighth overall with a time of 13.50 seconds.

According to Brown, his attention is now on the Cayman Islands National Junior and Senior Championships this weekend, 16-17 June, followed by the CAC Games in El Salvador.

Gordon, 22, a University at Albany junior, jumped to a personal best at the NCAA championships in Texas. He posted 7.77 metres in the long jump, enough to place 11th overall ahead of 13 other competitors.
