Local combat enthusiasts enjoyed a No Gi sambo and submission wrestling seminar, spearheaded by two-time US Open and British Sambo champion Anthony Sansonetti at The Academy, on Saturday, 17 June.
Around 18 people turned out and hit the mats to learn extra skills like leglocks, that could benefit them should they pursue a career in the respective disciplines or just self-defence.
Sansonetti, who has more than 40 years’ experience in the combat world told the Compass that it isn’t the first time he has hosted seminars in Cayman.
“I’ve been to Cayman before and I previously did seminars at Cayman Fight Factory, which isn’t around anymore,” he said. “So I said, hey, can I jump in and show some of the guys some stuff, some of my knowledge?”
He added, “I have more time to do that, because I’m retired from teaching and competition.” The gym, owned by Ronnie Hughes, continues to be a staple in Cayman for self-defence classes and jiu jitsu. Visit www.theacademygc.com for more information.
