Cayman women’s national team striker Molly Kehoe is preparing to play in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers after signing for Cardiff City Bluebirds.
The 18-year-old, who was Cayman Islands women’s player of the year last season for Elite SC, was unveiled by the semi-pro outfit last week. Cardiff are the current Welsh champions and will compete in the Champions League qualifiers in September.
Kehoe, who is back in Cayman briefly before returning to the UK next week to resume pre-season training, told the Cayman Compass, “I am very excited to have been offered this opportunity with Cardiff City Women and I would like to thank all the coaches who have helped me get this far.”
The former Cayman Prep student has made a name for herself at the international level in all age groups and the senior team for Cayman.
Cardiff women’s head coach Iain Darbyshire said in a story on the club’s website that he was pleased to inject fresh quality into his squad ahead of the new season.
“Molly is a talented young player who we feel can make a big impact at this level. I’m really looking forward to working with [her] and hopefully, [sh can contribute to another successful season for us.”
Kehoe is quoted in the same article saying,“I’m really excited to join the club. It’s a great environment for me to come into and every training session has been really positive.
“The club have been really successful over the last two seasons and that makes me really excited to join. Being a young player, I think I can gain a lot from playing here.”
Cardiff turned semi-pro last season and competes in the Welsh Adran Premier League. They begin their Champions League campaign against Lithuanian side FC Gintra on 6 Sept.
