Two new Summary Court trials have been set for Lovell Marriott, who is separately accused of being an idle and disorderly person, and assaulting police, after appearing in court on Thursday, 31 Aug.
The first of Marriott’s two trials – on allegedly being an idle or disorderly person – stems from her one-woman protest outside the Government Administration Building on 6 Jan. 2022.
However, midway through the two-day trial that began 2 Aug., the case was dramatically abandoned and contempt proceedings were initiated against Marriott for taking unauthorised photographs of the judge, witnesses and Cayman Compass staff.
“Your new trial dates have been set for 28 and 30 November and it will be before a different magistrate,” Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn, who had been presiding over Marriott’s case, said in court on Thursday.
When abandoning the August trial, Gunn had told Marriott, “In the interest of public perception that justice must not only be done but should be seen to be done publicly, after reflection, I have concluded that this trial must be aborted.”
Marriott will also be appearing in Summary Court on an unrelated set of charges of two counts of assaulting police and disorderly conduct, and one count of resisting arrest.
She has been released on bail.
