Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Gent has said that respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, have increased in the Cayman Islands, and he is advising those with symptoms to remain at home.

Gent, in a statement Thursday evening, confirmed the increase as he responded to concerns in the community over a resurgence of COVID cases.
While stating that this overall increase is “not only normal, but expected during this time of the year, especially in light of the upcoming flu season,” he said the Ministry of Health and Wellness is “maintaining vigilance” on current and emerging trends.
The ministry, he said, “will issue a public advisory if/when necessary”.
However, Gent reminded that “not all respiratory illnesses are caused by COVID-19”.
The number of COVID-19 cases is unknown as the Ministry of Health, shortly after dropping requirements for confirmatory testing, ceased reporting statistics.
Gent noted that there had been “a small increase in hospital admissions testing positive for COVID-19 in August”, but did not give specific figures.
He said the current hospitalisations due to respiratory illnesses are in line with previous years.
The Cayman Compass has requested the latest data; however, even that may not present an accurate picture as no one is required to report a positive test.
Gent is advising anyone suffering from a respiratory infection, whether caused by COVID-19, influenza or the common cold, to remain at home if symptomatic with fever, coughing, runny nose, muscle aches or chills.
He said individuals should return to work after being symptom free for a minimum of 24 hours.
He also advises people to practise respiratory hygiene, such as covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using masks when appropriate, using tissues and disposing of them properly, washing or sanitising hands before and after touching their mouth or nose.
Residents and visitors needing additional guidance are encouraged to contact the Flu Hotline on 1-800-534-8600, 947-3077, or email [email protected].
