Hospital chiefs aid in probe after prisoner flees custody on medical visit

Hospital chiefs are aiding police and prison officials with their investigation into how an inmate briefly escaped custody during a medical visit on Friday at the Cayman Islands Hospital.

The prisoner’s identity nor the charges he was facing at the time of his dash for freedom have not been released.

He was in the custody of prison officers in the parking lot when he absconded, the Health Services Authority told the Cayman Compass in response to emailed queries.

HSA officials said they were co-operating with law enforcement partners.

As for CCTV footage, the authority added it “shares footage when requested, keeping in mind patient privacy and confidentiality”.

On Saturday police confirmed the incident and said they have launched a “comprehensive investigation” into the escape.

The man was arrested for escaping lawful custody and was transferred to the detention center for processing.

The RCIPS said the investigation has been launched “to ascertain the details of the escape”.

“His Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service will continue to work closely with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service on the investigation,” the statement said.

The Cayman Compass questioned why the public was not alerted to a potentially dangerous prisoner on the run, however a police spokesperson stated, “a public notification was not required as the prisoner was apprehended by the police soon after he escaped”.

Police had said that shortly before 7:30pm on Friday 15 Sept., officers had responded to a 911 call regarding a prisoner who escaped the custody of prison officers while receiving medical treatment at Cayman Islands Hospital.

The RCIPS said on arriving at the scene police officers pursued the prisoner and “he was soon apprehended”.

It is unclear where the prisoner was apprehended and how long after his escape he was recaptured.

The Compass has requested further details on the incident from the Prison Service, including whether any staff had been suspended pending the investigation.

We are awaiting a response to our queries.
