John Gray student named 2023 tourism ambassador

The Cayman Islands has a new tourism ambassador – Rayne Harding of John Gray High School.

The 14-year-old accomplished musician and member of the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps won the 2023 Tourism Ambassador Video Competition to be selected for the role.

The competition invited students between the ages of 14 and 17 to submit formal video presentations on one of three topics affecting Caribbean tourism.

Harding impressed the selection committee with his video presentation, ‘Grand Tripping: A focus on multi-generational travel’, according to a Department of Tourism press release.

The Year 10 pupil outlined why the Cayman Islands tourism product should cater to the needs of multi-generational travellers including children, parents and grandparents.

In his role as tourism ambassador, Harding will represent the destination at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Tourism Youth Congress, taking place in the Turks and Caicos Islands from 10 to 13 Oct.

Over the next year, he will also attend selected events sponsored by the Ministry and Department of Tourism.

The Tourism Ambassador Video Competition is a part of the DoT’s local tourism awareness programme.

In addition to promoting tourism awareness, the competition “aims to assist young students to develop useful communication, reasoning and public speaking skills”, the DoT said in the release.

The announcement of the 2023 ambassador came on World Tourism Day, which is commemorated each year on 27 Sept. and geared towards fostering awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
