The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for six new Caymanian stars in vocational and technical careers to adorn island-wide billboards.
After a very successful first year, VoTech Stars is back for 2023-2024.
The award programme aims to fill Cayman’s skills gap by informing, and encouraging young Caymanians to consider a career that may not be ‘traditional’, the chamber said in a press release.
The first six ‘stars’ were a tour guide, an AC technician, a firefighter, a heavy equipment operator, a diver and a combination plans analyst.
But nominations are not limited to those categories; they are open to anyone working in a vocational or technical field.
When chosen, the new VoTech Stars will act as ambassadors for their industry, informing other Caymanians about the benefits of their jobs, and what it takes to succeed.
Each VoTech Star gets to tell their own story in their own words and what they love about their work through a series of videos published on the chamber’s website and on YouTube.
The videos may be used by the careers departments of schools and colleges as a resource, helping young people consider the full range of career options available to them according to the release.
They are also invited to speak at public engagements.
And each of the six VoTech stars will be promoted on billboards at various locations around the Cayman Islands.
“By supporting VoTech Stars, you are helping young people to find just the right career for them,” the chamber said.
This will also help to build “a local pool of skills and expertise that will grow into a valuable national resource as we move into a more diverse economy”, it added.
More information is available on the Chamber of Commerce website.
