Residents in the eastern districts will be able to receive free health screenings and get their flu jabs on 2 Dec. at the East End United Church Hall.

The free health screenings, hosted by Rotary Sunset and the Lions Club of Grand Cayman from 10am to noon, will include checks for high or low blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels and mouth cancers. There will also be hearing tests as well as blood tests to check for prostate cancer, among other screenings.

Kimberly Owens, chair of Rotary Sunset’s mental health and wellness committee, said free screenings, which often occur in more central areas, like George Town, are rarely held in the eastern districts, so the clubs wanted to ensure that the community in that part of the island is also catered to.

She said the clubs had reached out to community development officers in East End, North Side and Bodden Town to help spread the word.

They’re hoping for a good turnout, as “we’ve done a lot by word of mouth, and through social media, asking people to post the fliers to let everyone know”.

Grand Cayman’s three hospitals – Doctors Hospital, Cayman Islands Hospital and Health City – are working with the clubs on the event.

The Cayman Islands Diabetes Association will be on hand to take blood sugar readings, while ENT Cayman will be carrying out hearing tests.

Health City’s Dr. Agniva Basu will be carrying out oral cancers checks, and the Cayman Heart Fund will be doing blood pressure and BMI screenings.

Health Services Authority staff will also be providing free flu shots at the church hall.

Attendees will also have a chance to see the giant inflatable colon that the Lions and Health City have been using to promote awareness of colon cancer.

Doctors in various fields will be giving talks during the event, including Dr. Darley Solomon who will speak about colon cancer, and Dr. Andrew Robinson, who will cover the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes.

There will also be free information on giving up smoking and vaping.

For Rotary Sunset, a new club which was established in May this year, this is its first free public health screening event, Owens said.
