Governor Owen marks first Christmas in Cayman

Governor Jane Owen, who will be celebrating her first Christmas in the Cayman Islands, says she is looking forward to spending the holidays with her children and cooking her traditional Christmas dinner.

Owen is planning on cooking a turkey, saying she will leave the traditional Cayman-style beef to the experts.

“I’m not sure I’m brave enough to try and do Caymanian-style beef. But I’m hoping to actually try some that somebody else has cooked, which is probably a much safer way forward,” Owen, appearing on the Cayman Compass talkshow ‘The Resh Hour’ last week, said as she shared her holiday plans.

The governor noted she has been enjoying the holiday spirit in the community and the many decorated homes.

“I was driving around [Tuesday 20 Dec.] enjoying some of the beautiful Christmas lights. Thank you very much to the Bodden sisters, all three of them, who welcomed me into their home and showed me around their wonderful display. It’s been very nice to to do some of that,” she said.

She has also spent time visiting with the elderly residents at The Pines Retirement Home.

“It was great to see some of the residents and some of the visitors who were there and to see this wonderful facility that we should all be so proud of here in Cayman,” she said.

The governor also visited Cayman Brac last week to take part in that island’s Christmas celebrations.

Owen sent Christmas greetings to the community during the interview, saying that she hoped that everyone gets some rest over the holiday season.

She also thanked those who will be working over that time.

“I know that not everybody gets a rest so we’re very grateful to all those people who are out there working and serving the community even during the holiday days. I hope people are able to spend it with their family, with their friends, spend some time talking to loved ones who are maybe not on the island as well,” she said.

Owen added she hoped “the fellowship and message of hope and community really shines through as it always does in Cayman” during the holiday season.
