More than four dozen golfers teed off Friday, 9 Feb., for the Lions Club of Grand Cayman’s 51st annual golf scramble tournament, at the North Sound Golf Club.

The charity event featured 13 corporate teams comprising four golfers each trying their luck on the green. Taking the overall victory was ‘RSM 1’ consisting of Alex Bodden, Mark Sparg, Calvin Hall and Cayman’s national champion Andrew Jarvis.

“We had a very tight competition,” Lions immediate past president Michael Havlin told the Compass, recounting the “neck-and-neck” finish of the first two teams, and calling it “fantastic”.

Finishing in the silver position after 18 holes was Kirk Freeport – captained by Daniel Kirkconnell – followed by Health City, led by Bill Edwards.

Although the event highlighted the competitiveness of many golfers, everyone was there to give back to the long-time charity.

The annual golf tournament raised more than US$10,000, proceeds that Havlin says will be put to good use.

“This event really helped the Lions foundation with a donation that is going straight to the humanitarian efforts of this organisation,” he said.

Havlin ended by saying that the tournament wouldn’t have been possible without the many sponsors that came onboard and the Lions who volunteered their time.

The Cayman Compass also fielded a team, which gamely held up the rear with their one-over-par finish, perhaps due in part to bringing the 19th hole along on the green with them.

Comprising Eric Vincent, the veteran; Conor Barry, MVP on the day; James Whittaker, sportsman; and Seaford Russell Jr, the rookie, the group rallied for some top plays and other not-so-great shots that elicited some colourful language.

When the action came to a halt and Havlin announced that team Compass came last, Vincent reminded the surprised crew that it was all in fun and in support of a good cause.
