Visitors to Coco Fest 2024 soaked up some shoreside sun while having the opportunity to mill about, experiencing all the ways the beloved produce has shaped Caymanian culture through the generations.
The event, which took place Saturday, 17 Feb. at the historic Pedro St. James, featured a full lineup of crafters, cooks and bartenders utilising the versatility of the coconut.
Pedro St. James Operations Manager Candace Ransome-Grant said this year’s celebration was a success.
She said patrons streamed in steadily throughout the afternoon, and the pleasant early evening offered an opportunity for families to enjoy the activities.
One was the showing of the documentary “Bright Spot” at the site’s theater. The film addresses the changing relationship between Cayman Islands residents and coconuts through the years.
Ransome-Grant said community members can expect an even bigger festival for the 10th anniversary next year.
“Having so many visitors come out today was definitely meaningful to us,” she said. “Next year is definitely going to be even bigger and better.”

Singer Dexter Bodden, one of the performers that day, said Coco Fest is an event he always looks forward to supporting.
“It’s rooted in coconuts – that’s one thing for sure,” he said with a laugh.
“In my personal opinion, I think coconut is the most important plant on the planet. You can get food from it, you can get shelter. You can make clothes, shoes, everything, from one tree.”
