The Miss World Cayman Islands organisation has confirmed that reigning queen, Leanni Tibbetts, is ‘doing well’ after receiving medical treatment for losing her voice.
Tibbetts, who is competing in the 71st edition of the Miss World pageant in India, took to social media on Wednesday to share she had “lost her voice basically the first day” of the competition, which prevented her from introducing herself on the world stage.
On her social media post, Tibbetts said prior to starting a ‘beep test’ (to qualify for the sports challenge of the competition), she saw a doctor. “They said that I would need to be nebulized. She also gave me some medicine to take for the next three days.”
The Miss World Cayman Islands organisation said on Thursday, “Following her arrival in India, Leanni lost her voice. We are in communication with Leanni and the Miss World organisation and are satisfied that Leanni is otherwise in good health and doing well… [T]he Miss World organisation has reassured us that Leanni has had medical attention and… is doing well and in good spirits.”
The statement continued, “Despite this unforeseen challenge, Leanni has pushed through and continues to represent herself and the country with poise and admiration.
“We will continue communicating with Leanni and the Miss World organisation to ensure Leanni is comfortable and makes a full recovery.”
On Thursday, Tibbetts took to social media say: “Thank you all for still showing me love and support. I am still feeling highly blessed and favoured. God is still moving in my life and I am overjoyed to have met many sisters in faith at Miss World. The Miss World organisation and the girls have all been overly supportive. I am BEYOND grateful.”
Despite a voiceless start, Tibbetts joined the more than 100 contestants in the opening ceremony of the competition, which took place in Delhi, India on 20 Feb.
The 27-year-old pilot and volunteer sub-lieutenant with the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps stepped out in a modern take of a Cayman traditional costume, designed by Caymanian model and actress Selita Ebanks and tailored by Larry of LM Fashion Couture, “connecting past, present and future for Cayman’s women,” according to a social media post by Miss World Cayman Islands.
“The thatch woven hat by Ms. Rose May Ebanks honours the strength of Cayman’s women from the past, who paved the way for today’s strong women and represents the Islands’ unique matriarchal past.
“The corset and pants symbolise today’s growth, and the 20,000 hand encrusted crystal Cayman crest cape proudly represents tomorrow’s shining Caymanian superheroes,” the post said.
Miss World, the oldest international beauty pageant, will culminate on 9 March at Jio World Convention Centre, in Mumbai, scheduled for 9am Cayman time.
Contestants will have their own media channel on the MissWorld.com platform to give them a chance to showcase why they deserve to be among the Top 20 finalists.
