Haiti defeats Cayman 4-1 in U20 regional qualifiers

The valiant efforts of Cayman’s under-20 boys football team fell short on Friday as they went down 4-1 to Haiti in their opening match of the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship qualifiers.

“While the result may not be what we hoped for, the resilience and determination displayed are worth celebrating,” the Cayman Islands Football Association wrote on its Instagram page moments after the game.

The Group E fixture, which took place at the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association Technical Center in Saint Peter Basseterre, was competitive until the Haitians turned it up a level late in the second half.

Schneilorens Lebrun of Haiti got an early lead for his team in the 12th minute of the match – the only goal scored in the first half.

Haiti’s Bryan Destin was brought on at half time and proved to be a super substitute as he ultimately went on to score a hat-trick (56′, 80′, 90’+5).

Cayman sole goal came in the 61st minute by Joshwa Campbell.

The 345 boys will now turn their attention to Puerto Rico on Sunday, 25 Feb., before taking on hometown team St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday, 27 Feb.

The first-place team from each group will advance to the 2024 CONCACAF Men’s U-20 Championship, joining the six pre-seeded top-ranked nations.
