The ongoing roadworks in George Town are being divided into 50-foot-long sections as the capital’s revitalisation project continues.
Traffic diversions and lane closures are currently in place along Edward Street, Main Street, Cardinall Avenue and Dr. Roy’s Drive.
Project manager Keisha Callender, of the Public Works Department, said in a statement, “We have been pleased with the flow of vehicle traffic through central George Town throughout the first two phases of the Traffic Diversion Plan, and we are confident that the [National Roads Authority’s] approach, which has broken down the works into smaller sections, will continue to keep the project teams moving as quickly as possible through the central business district.”

Following the completion of the newly pedestrianised Cardinall Avenue section, which was part of the first phase of the Central Business District Enhancement Project, work is now continuing on phase two. This involves reconstructing the intersection in front of the George Town Post Office, as well as upgrades to underground infrastructure on the connecting sections of Edward Street, Main Street and Shedden Road.
When the start of phase two was announced in September last year, it was stated at the time it would take about seven month to complete.
Earlier this year, the Caribbean Utilities Company and the Water Authority Cayman completed underground infrastructure work along the south section of Edward Street, and have now moved on to northern section of the road, by Fort Street.

Meanwhile, contractor Robson Construction has begun overground works, which includes installing new deep wells and fire wells, and electrical work for a new lighting plan at the post office intersection.
According to the government statement on the works, issued this week, the Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure, Robson Construction, CUC, the Water Authority and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, have weekly meetings to discuss “project progress, upcoming deliverables, key updates and feedback”.
Colin Lumsden, George Town manager and revitalisation initiative coordinator, said, “The [Central Business District Enhancement Project] is a large-scale and complex capital project with many stakeholders involved, but by using the Critical Path Method in our project management, and regular offsite and onsite meetings, we are making good progress.”

Hopefully this project will fare better than the “Missing Link” on North Church St which seems to have gone into permanent hibernation. Could the Compass get an update on these roadworks and inform the public?.
