Construction work has commenced on the new Pease Bay public beach and park, with a projected completion date of August this year.

Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly formally turned the sod for the start of the work last Tuesday.

The beach is one of almost 50 pieces of land purchased by government last year as part of its programme to create new public parks and beaches.

“The Pease Bay Public Beach represents our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Caymanians,” said O’Connor-Connolly in a statement. “Through strategic property acquisitions and collaborative efforts with the Public Works Department, we aim to create a beachfront destination that offers recreational opportunities, stimulates economic growth, and fosters community engagement.”

The cost of the project, which is being managed by the Public Works Department, has been requested by the Cayman Compass and we are awaiting that figure.

Local construction company Lalev Construction Ltd was awarded the contract following an open procurement process.

Lalev Construction owner Wesley Lalor was on hand for the ceremony last week.

The beach will provide essential amenities, such as restrooms, hurricane-rated cabanas, mobility mats for wheelchair access and ample parking.

“It will also boast special features designed to elevate the visitor experience, including a culturally-inspired, Cayman Turtle mosaic, sand volleyball court, boardwalk for pond access, and innovative camping pods,” according the government statement.

Bodden Town East MP and Minister of Labour and Culture Dwayne Seymour said he was delighted to see the development of Pease Bay Public Beach.

“This project not only enhances our cultural heritage but also provides vital amenities for residents and visitors to enjoy,” he said.

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan added that the Pease Bay Public Beach “will contribute to the diversification of our tourism offerings, attracting visitors seeking authentic experiences and beautiful coastal landscapes.”
