Two men were arrested for firearm offences on Sunday night following a police chase during which the suspects’ car collided with another vehicle.
During the chase, the men were seen throwing objects out of their car. When police searched the area later, they found a handgun and a loaded magazine.
Police said firearm officers had come across the two men, ages 24 and 30, both of West Bay, “behaving suspiciously” inside a white Toyota Mark Two, while the officers were carrying out a patrol at a plaza on West Bay Road, south of Seven Mile Public Beach, around 8pm.
In a statement issued on Monday, the RCIPS said the men fled in their vehicle upon seeing the officers.
“Police used lights and siren to signal the vehicle to stop, however, the vehicle failed to stop, continued driving in an unsafe manner and, on entering the Lime Tree Bay roundabout, collided with another vehicle and failed to stop at the scene of the collision.
“No injuries were reported to the police as a result of the collision from any of the parties involved.”
The men’s car continued back onto West Bay Road as they tried evade police.
Police said that during this time the officers observed the occupants “ejecting objects from the vehicle”.
The car then made its way towards West Bay, and was eventually stopped by police along Town Hall Road.
The two men were arrested and searched.
As well as the handgun and loaded magazine found on West Bay Road, police also located a single round of ammunition inside the vehicle, the RCIPS said.
The men, who were arrested on suspicion of possessing an unlicensed firearm, remained in police custody Monday pending further investigations.
