Following a rash of thefts from cars, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service have arrested a man on suspicion of two separate thefts, one involving items taken from a vehicle and the other related to a tip jar.
The RCIPS arrested the 27-year-old George Town man on Saturday, suspecting he was responsible for taking items from a vehicle parked outside a restaurant on Shedden Road.
Officers also arrested the man on suspicion of theft regarding a tip jar allegedly taken from inside that restaurant, according to a Tuesday press release.
“The man is also being investigated in relation to a number of other similar incidents,” the press release said.
Last week, the RCIPS issued a public advisory warning community members about an increase in reported thefts from vehicles. The advisory encouraged residents to avoid leaving personal belongings in their cars, especially considering the thefts were from both unlocked vehicles and ‘smash-and-grabs’.
“We continue to see thefts from vehicles advancing from ‘opportunistic’ in nature, where unlocked vehicles have provided easy access to thieves, to what we consider are targeted and brazen thefts, whereby thieves are scanning car interiors for items of value before smashing windows and taking items,” Chief Superintendent Brad Ebanks said in the advisory.
Police especially encouraged residents to be careful not to store valuables like expensive construction tools out in the open.
Police are asking anyone encountering these thefts to contact the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
In addition, anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS through its confidential tip line at 949-7777, or via its website.
Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Cayman Crime Stoppers website.
