Capella scores with mix for music lovers

The Capella Music Festival served a feast of treats to satisfy all tastes on Saturday as it transformed the Camana Bay Festival Green into a music lover’s paradise.

The event delivered many nostalgic moments, with performances that ran the gamut from rock to reggae royalty.

Chart-topping entertainer Richard Marx and concert headliner Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley were just two of the names on the star-studded bill.

It also showcased local talents on the main stage, including Regeneration Band, Stuart Wilson and DJs Sound Revolution, and Rion Kirk.

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan said the ministry was committed to delivering concerts for the community and revealed that a QR code was launched for the public to vote on which musical act they would like to see perform in Cayman.

Marx, who kicked off the international acts, delivered a welcome blast from the past, and even looked the part as he sported an ‘80s retro ensemble of a white MTV sleeveless T-shirt, neon green shorts and white sneakers for his performance.

The American singer performed his megahits, including ‘Right Here Waiting’, self-accompanied on piano.

He also sang his hit song ‘Angelia’, which he dedicated to a member of the audience, who was holding a sign saying that her parents named her after the song.

Marley channelled his father in his performance, building on the nostalgic hype from the ‘One Love’ movie biopic about Bob Marley.

Marley, a great performer and hit maker in his own right, owned the audience as he belted his megahit ‘Welcome to Jamrock,’ among others.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr, who followed Marx, thrilled as she performed her global hit, ‘Rush’.

Starr showed off her trademark hip sways as she moved across the stage introducing some in the audience to the Afrobeats genre.

UK superstar Becky Hill had the audience on their feet for her electrifying performance as she sang some of her popular hits and added some of her newer pieces to her act.

Hill also announced that her new record will be out in May and sang ‘Outside of Love’, which will be in the album.

Trinidadian megastar KES the Band injected some Caribbean flavour into the mix on the mainstage, raising the heat after the sun had set.

Lead vocalist Kees Dieffenthaller showed off his versatility. Apart from singing his hits, like ‘Wotless’ and ‘Hello’, he belted out 80’s music and some classic dancehall hits.

The event featured two separate areas, Supernova and Studio 54, showcasing local bands and DJs.

The festival also offered food options from local restaurants and a fun 360 camera from Digicel.
