A sea of blue washed over Elgin Avenue when dawn broke Sunday morning as hundreds took to the street for the final leg of the Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge run/walk.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, together with Governor Jane Owen, led the start of the event, which took participants through the arteries of George Town.

Civil Service Employee of the Year 2023 Zhane Rambaran also took part in the challenge.

Manderson, speaking with the Cayman Compass Sunday, said this year’s event saw a record breaking turnout across all three islands.

“Between the three Islands, we had over 2,000 [participants, with] over 1,900 registered in Grand Cayman,” he said, adding that it was “a resounding testament to the incredible spirit of our people”.

Reflecting on the support, the deputy governor added, “Our beloved Islands are so very special because of the commitment and generosity of our residents”.

He said the overwhelming success of this year’s event will help provide vital financial support to “three exceptional charities – Boyz2Men, the NCVO, and the Addison Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund”.

“Their programmes empower and uplift our youth, investing in the future leaders of our community. The event is also a fantastic celebration of healthy living and physical activity. It was truly energizing to see so many people of all ages exercising enthusiastically,” he added.

During the Cayman Brac leg of the event, more than 100 teens from the Boyz2Men programme, all of whom were visiting the Brac for their inaugural cultural trip, participated.

Their addition took it to a record breaking turnout for that leg of the annual event.

Manderson extended his gratitude to sponsors, volunteers, and every participant “who made this achievement possible”.
