The 2024 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge got off to a record-breaking start on Sunday, 14 April, during the Cayman Brac leg where 186 people participated – the most since the inception of the event.

The growth in numbers for the annual walk/run, was a result of more than 100 teens from the Boyz2Men programme visiting the Brac for their inaugural cultural trip.

“This has been our biggest, in terms of attendance, largest DG5K that we have ever held on Cayman Brac,” Deputy Governor Franz Manderson told the Compass at the run. “I was so pleased that they were able to join us here in record numbers.

“The theme of this year DG5K is ‘supporting our future generations’ and nothing does that better than to start here in Cayman Brac with our amazing charity Boyz2Men.”

The DG’s 5K, now in its 10th year, takes place on Cayman Brac, Little Cayman and Grand Cayman.

Boyz2Men is one of three charities who will benefit from funds raised during the event, in addition to National Children’s Voluntary Organisation and the Addison Kelly Memorial Scholarship.

Manderson said he is very proud of all those charities and also thanked some of the sponsors that helped make the Cayman Brac DG’s 5K possible.

“We have one of our Gold sponsors, EY; [the Health Services Authority] was also here as well; but what really made me feel good in my heart, was having one of our charities here,” Manderson said.

“I identify with that charity, and the work that they do, to turn our young boys into men, into productive citizens. I am very moved by the work that they do.”

The Little Cayman instalment of the event will take place this Sunday, 21 April, followed by the ‘big one’ in Grand Cayman on 28 April.
