1 May: A plan to close the boat ramp and dock at Old Man Bay in North Side this week while dredging work is carried out has been postponed.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development says it has decided to put off the closure of the dock to a later, as yet unspecified, date.
Original story: The boat ramp and dock at Old Man Bay in North Side will be closed until at least 6 May while dredging at the site is carried out, according to a government announcement.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport and Development stated that the boat ramp and dock would be temporarily closed from Monday, 29 April, until Monday, 6 May, contingent on weather conditions.
In the statement, the ministry said the dredging project, which had been permitted and approved by the Department of Environment, is “a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at improving navigational access and ensuring the safety of marine traffic in the area”.
It added, “By removing sediment and debris from the waterway, the project aims to enhance the functionality and efficiency of the Boat Ramp and Dock for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.”
Construction of a new dock at Old Man Bay was carried out last year.
The ministry said it was urging boaters and members of the public to exercise caution and adhere to all safety advisories during this period.
It said, “The temporary closure of the Boat Ramp and Dock underscores the Ministry’s commitment to investing in vital infrastructure projects that contribute to the sustainable development of the Cayman Islands. Upon completion of the dredging activities, residents and visitors can expect improved access and enhanced safety measures at the facility.”
