While many rested and relaxed on Discovery Day, that was not the case for 27 teams competing for a top prize of $5,000 in the 12th annual Adventure Challenge.

From rifle shooting to axe throwing and puzzle solving, a total of 104 people, divided into teams of 4, traversed Grand Cayman to complete each challenge and get a shot at the money bag.

In the end, the Great Wight Fitness team emerged as the day’s winners.

Organiser Blake Rogers, general manager of dms Broadcasting, described the adventure challenge as a combination of the television series Survivor and The Amazing Race.

“There’s 10 different checkpoints around the island and teams of four will travel to each checkpoint yo compete in a challenge that’s either timed, or points based. The team of the best combined score at the end of the day wins the grand prize, which is $5,000 cash,” Rogers said.

At the Hotel Indigo, challenge competitors had to uncover and match images on tiles from memory as fast as they could.

The Cayman Compass caught up with team Integra Babies after they completed their puzzle challenge in two minutes in the carpark of the newly opened hotel in West Bay.

“It’s so much fun,” one competitor said.

As they raced to their car to get to their next challenge, another teammate said it was his first time at the Adventure Challenge and he was excited to participate the event.

“It’s been really great experience, we are going for the $5,000,” he said, as his teammates cheered.

The event also featured a physical challenge with an obstacle course at Motion’s Unlimited and a basketball dunking contest at the new Refuel service station at Island Heritage Roundabout.

The challenges also featured a quiz element at the Cayman Turtle Centre that tested competitors knowledge of the Cayman Islands, turtles and Discovery Day.

Rogers said the aim of the challenge is to offer experiences that people normally do not get to do on island, such as attending the Cayman Islands Gun Club.

“It’s chance for the Gun Club to expose members of the community to what they do and the importance of gun safety,” he added.

The challenge kicked off at 8:30am at the Gun Club and ended with the final task at the George Town Yacht Club.
