Participants on the Chamber of Commerce’s Mentoring Cayman programme got together for a fun – but also helpful and constructive – social event on Friday 31 May at the Triple C School. Facilitator Serg Sandy – a leader from the Cayman Islands YMCA – invited the mentees and mentors to spend some time getting to know one another before the games – each of which was designed to engender confidence, teambuilding and leadership skills – began. Mentors and Mentees were invited to stand up and say something they had found out about each other.
The first game was an icebreaker Bingo session – with squares that needed to be filled in with the signatures of people who fitted each description – from, “I like cooking” to “I have five brothers and sisters.” The first person to fill in the squares was the winner. “The idea is Stepping out of your comfort zone, because that’s where growth takes place,” Sandy said.
Next, the fun really began with a drawing game to build teams – a game of ‘Pictionary’ As soon as one of the team correctly guessed picture, they ran to the front to tell Sandy the answer – and were given another drawing task.
“I am going to give you a word, your job is to go back to your group and draw that word. If somebody in your group guesses, then they come to me for the next word.”
The final game was a kind of Blind Man’s Buff, where mentees were blindfolded, so that they had to trust the instructions of their guide in order to get to the other end of the room.
All of the participants learned much – about trust, leadership and teamwork – while having a lot of fun!
About Mentoring Cayman
Mentoring Cayman was established by the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce in 2002. It’s a unique program that pairs high-achieving year 11 students from public and private high schools, selected by their principals, with mentors from the government and the private sector. These mentors provide guidance and encouragement to the students, helping them prepare for their
future careers. The program has been a valuable opportunity for both students and mentors alike, fostering meaningful interactions and providing access to experiences not found elsewhere in the Cayman Islands. If you’re interested in getting involved, consider becoming a mentor by reaching out to Swan Sandoval 7439124 or email [email protected]
