Caymanian swimmer Kyra Rabess dominated her opposition in the pool during her first term at the University of Northern Colorado, enough for her to be recognised as ‘Freshman of the Year’ in the Western Athletic Conference.
Rabess closed out her freshman season at UNC with multiple school and national records, in addition to registering a 3.6 GPA as she studies psychology.
“Honestly, it was a better year than I thought it was going to be,” Rabess told the Compass. “Just to see the results, I was happy with it.”
She set school records in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle and a national record in the 1,500-metre free during a meet in Barcelona where she represented Cayman.
Rabess said she fit right into the UNC Bears team as she joined her countrywomen, siblings Sarah and Alison Jackson.
“It was nice to have two familiar faces,” she said, adding that she also knew the coach prior to enrolling.
Now, heading into her sophomore term, Rabess said her expectation is to pick up where she left off and welcome the freshman swimmers to the squad.
“We have a lot of new girls coming into the programme, so I’m looking forward to putting in the work and seeing how the results come out,” Rabess said.
When asked about her future plans in the sport, particularly the 2028 Olympics, she said, “Ultimately, that is my goal. I’ve also wanted to achieve that.”
