Greatness can be defined in many ways; it is also often cloaked in humility. Some say that one achieves greatness through skill, leadership, perseverance, and achievement, among other qualities and actions. Others believe that greatness is not defined by society but by one’s own individual perception of others.
JC Calhoun III was one of those individuals who made it easy to bridge these perspectives, no matter your interpretation. The term “Unsung Hero” fits him perfectly—and that’s exactly how he wanted it. When he did things for others, he did so not for recognition, nor accolades. His actions were the epitome of selflessness.
JC’s contributions to society, particularly in shaping the future of the younger generation in the Cayman Islands, easily place him in the company of the most respected and recognised figures on our beautiful islands. In the coming weeks, as you read the tributes to him, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn of his foundational work on projects that were important to him. Such as, breathing life to organisations like the YMCA, here in Cayman.
Cayman Islands Little League was a particular labour of love that JC started, financially supported and remained committed to, as far back as the 80’s. His passion is what drove him to raise $2.5 Million to redo the Field of Dreams, almost single-handedly. All of his initiatives continue to affect generations of youth on island, and will do so indefinitely.
Let these revelations serve as a testament to his commitment, resolve, and giving nature.
His philanthropic deeds extended beyond society at large. He reached out personally to assist families in need. He supported community families with ailing loved ones, or whom had special needs and needed assistance. He also provided financial aid to promising students to further their education…and did so through his own inspired passion to help those in need.
JC’s commitment to his faith was unwavering and was undoubtedly his most endearing quality. It guided his caring nature and dedication to giving back—and giving ‘well’.
As a Devout Catholic, he was a member of the Pastoral Council in Cayman and led the Choir of his church. JC intertwined his faith with his work, clients, team, and family with equal attention and dedication.
Even in his limited personal time, which was often consumed by his extensive contributions, he sought ways to help society, sharing his informed thoughts and values for the betterment of others. He gave his whole ‘self ’ to his ideals.
JC’s impact also extended beyond the younger generations. He was a cornerstone in the foundation of CIREBA, and his commitment to fairness was instrumental in shaping the constitutional rules that all members adhere to today, with the support of our own Government. These rules and CIREBA’s standards ensure the integrity of the real estate industry across the Cayman Islands and will stand the test of time.
If you had the privilege of knowing JC personally, you would recall his infectious sense of humour. He was always a pleasure to be with, bringing joy and warmth to those around him.
This…was our JC—and it was also ‘your’ JC. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives, near or far.
They say that when you pass from this world, you do so…twice. Once, when you take your final breath…the other is the last time your name or memory leaves the lips of someone that shares something about you. JC’s contribution to society has afforded him a way to transcend this. He shall remain a pillar for all the efforts he laboured over and gifted to our islands.
