Following the conclusion of the Cayman Islands Classic men’s tournament, the best US women’s college teams have now taken to the court in hopes of racking up wins in their pre-season campaign.
The second annual Cayman Islands Women’s Classic commenced on Thursday, with Mississippi State taking on Utah in a highly contested match, at the John Gray High School gymnasium.
Utah erased what was a dominant first half by Mississippi State, coming back to take the lead at 60-59 with just 1:23 on the clock, but after going shot for shot, Mississippi’s Madina Okot hit a three pointer which ultimately secured the game.
Coach Sam Purcell noted after the match on the postgame radio interview, that is was about digging deep and finding the win even when it seemed unreachable.
“We’ve got to … learn quick,” Purcell said. “I love this team, but can you imagine if we get this down to 11 [turnovers], how special this team could be?”
With the win, Mississippi improved to 7-0 for the pre-season and will look to make it eight straight Friday evening when they return to the court against the University of South Florida – their final game of the tournament – at 7:30pm.
Prior to that, Notre Dame will face Texas Christian University in the first skirmish between unbeaten teams, with tipoff at 5pm.
Utah will return to action on Saturday, against Notre Dame at 5pm, before the tournament wraps up with a 7:30pm clash between South Florida and TCU.
