Texas Christian University closes the show at Cayman Classic

The Cayman Classic wrapped up on Saturday, after a week of exciting action at the John Gray High School gymnasium by the best male and female NCAA teams.

The mega event closed with a women’s showdown between Texas Christian University and the University of South Florida for what proved to be a one-sided beat down.

TCU began with an early lead and maintained their dominance until the final buzzer, winning a convincing 87-46.

Prior to TCU’s victory, Utah faced off against Notre Dame – a more competitive match on the final day that ended in favour of the Utes at 78-67.

The day before, Mississippi State picked up their second win of the women’s tournament, defeating South Florida by a small margin of 59-52. Meanwhile, TCU had secured their first win at the classic, topping Notre Dame 76-68.

Cayman women’s classic begins with Mississippi edging Utah

The second annual Cayman Islands Women’s Classic commenced on Thursday, with Mississippi State taking on Utah in a highly contested match.

That game featured a dominant first half by Mississippi State, coming back to take the lead at 60-59 with just 1:23 on the clock. After going shot for shot, Mississippi’s Madina Okot hit a three pointer, which ultimately secured the game.

The all-tournament team for the women’s tournament saw six players who stood out with top performances, including the Most Valuable Player, 6’7″ Sedona Prince of TCU, who led her team to two victories. She completed the tournament with 37 points, 33 rebounds and 11 blocked shots.

Prince’s teammate Hailey Van Lith also made the all-tournament list after amassing 44 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists.

Jerkaila Jordan of Mississippi State made the team as well, accounting for 29 total points, eight rebounds and five assists in her two games. Twenty-two of her points came against South Florida.

Inês Vieira from Utah, Sonia Citron from Notre Dame, and Sammie Puisis of South Florida capped the list.

Before the women took centre stage, the Cayman Islands Classic men’s tournament began the entertainment, resulting in Boston College being crowned champions after a competitive final against Boise State on Tuesday, 26 Nov.
