50 years ago: First results for CNB; pirate film premiere

The financial statement of Cayman National Bank, which opened its doors on 28 Jan., was covered on the front page of the 19 Dec. 1974 edition of The Caymanian Compass – ‘CNB Reports Modest Profits In First 9 Months’. Officially formed in November the year before, the bank’s audited statement, for 21 Nov. 1973 to 31 Oct. 1974, showed a profit of $600. Peter Tomkins, the bank’s CEO, said he was “very pleased with the result”. Noting it was still a small bank, he added, “our balance sheet shows exceptional strength and we are operating profitably and in excellent shape”.

The Compass also reported on the world premiere of the film, ‘Pirates of the Cayman Islands’, which included a review. Held at the Grand Caymanian Holiday Inn, the showing attracted an audience of more than 150. Produced and directed by the hotel’s Anderson Humphries, among the cast were Reid Dennis, Larry Cayasso, Barefoot Man, Rita Dennis and Wendy Lauer. The reporter/reviewer, Tessa Bodden, noting the production “was not slated to be posh or even sophisticated”, said that, according to emcee Brian Uzzell, the film cost about $49,700 less than the last movie on Cayman. The antics of the film’s characters produced “a zany slaphappy theme”, the review noted, adding “the film is very refreshing and highly entertaining”.

A photo of a ‘big Christmas present’ depicted Cayman Water Company moving 40,000 pounds of water-desalination machinery into its new plant next to Mitchell’s Creek Development on West Bay Road. The first delivery of a large desalination plant to Grand Cayman, the machine would be able to produce 50,000 gallons of fresh water per day, or about 18 million gallons a year.
