One man has been killed and three others hospitalised with serious injuries following a “fatal single-vehicle collision” on Boxing Day.

“Instead of enjoying the rest of the festive season, a family is now dealing with the grief of this tragic loss. And this fatal collision follows another serious collision only hours before,” Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton said in an update issued by police on Thursday.

“In fact, over the past 48 hours our officers have observed and ticketed a number of drivers travelling at excessive speeds. We again implore all drivers: slow down, drive safely, and avoid turning the holiday season into a season of grief,” he said.

The Boxing Day incident happened shortly after 2:20am on Shamrock Road in the vicinity of Midway Close, according to information released by police.

The road has subsequently been reopened to traffic.

Emergency services attended the location and three occupants of the car were transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment by ambulance, while one was transported via private vehicle.

One man was subsequently pronounced dead and the three others remain in hospital. The RCIPS expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Police said the collision happened when the Subaru sedan, travelling eastbound along Shamrock Road, left the roadway and collided with a tree.

No information was provided about the identity of the person killed.

Christmas Day collision

The incident happened after another collision on Shamrock Road happened on Christmas Day.

Police described this at the time as a “multiple-vehicle collision” which took place near Beach Bay Road.

People, including one child, who were injured in the three-vehicle collision shortly before 5:50pm on 25 Dec. have since been discharged from hospital, police said on Boxing Day.

The RCIPS reminded motorists of the National Drug Council’s Arrive Alive 345 Campaign, of which Compass Media is a sponsor. This includes the ‘Designated Driver Programme’, and the Purple Ribbon Bus service, a free bus service on New Year’s Eve for all districts.
