Lennox Turnham-Wheatley has emerged as the latest long-distance-swimming prospect after a top performance at the 36th annual CUC 800m and 400m Sea Swim.
The open-water event, held on Saturday, 11 Jan., at Governors Beach, featured nearly 100 swimmers, but Turnham-Wheatley not only crossed the line ahead of them all, but he did so with the fastest time for that event since 2019.
Turnham-Wheatley, of Camana Bay Swim Club, finished in 9:02.80.
“His results were faster than we expected,” Jacky Pellerin, technical director of race organisers Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association, told the Compass.
“He is a promising open-water swimmer and every time that he swims he shows great results, and he is determined to get better. And now with the departure of our older boys, Lennox and Adam Sellars, Will’s brother, are showing that they are the new rising stars.”

Adam Sellars finished second in the 800 metres in 9:34.17, marking the second fastest time in the last six years. Callahan Leask took third and Sienna Romer was the first female, placing ninth overall.
The annual CUC Sea Swim also featured a 400m swim for the younger participants.
Calvin Kalinowski won the race in 6:39.17. Samuel Johnson took the runner-up slot and Fiona Martin finished third.
A total of 95 swimmers took part in the event, with CIASA thanking everyone for their efforts on Saturday.
“Well done to all participants who entered the 36th CUC sea swim,” CIASA said. “Thank you again to all our continued sponsors; these events are only made possible with your support and most importantly our amazing volunteers.”
The next event on the association’s calendar is the CIASA Open Water National Championships, taking place on 1 Feb.
