The hopes of the Cayman Islands girls’ under-17 national team of advancing from the 2025 CONCACAF qualifiers were sacked after a pair of unfavourable results in the kick-off of the tournament.

The girls started their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on Monday, 27 Jan., at the José Antonio Figueroa Freyre Stadium in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, against fellow Group A team, Bermuda.

Despite Cayman having a 2% edge in possession, they were unable to covert the two of the eight shots that were on target.

Meanwhile, Bermudian girls who took 14 shots at goal, sunk two shots to hand the Caymanians a 2-0 loss to start the tournament.

Cayman then returned to action on 29 Jan., against host nation Puerto Rico. The Cayman team were determined to get the win and fought hard to do so, but again, they fell short, losing narrowly to the host team 1-0.

Prior to the CONCACAF competition kicking off, Cayman played a friendly match against Escalante FC, a Puerto Rican club, which the Cayman girls won 3-0.

Cayman will be hoping to close the show with a win when they play on 31 Jan., against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, who will also be searching for their first win of the tournament.

The tournament will see 22 teams vying for a chance to advance to the final round, with the top six group winners and the two best second-place finishers joining the four highest-ranked teams in the subsequent round.

This event marks the first stage of the qualifiers to be conducted under a new two-round format.
