Work has started on a new dock at the Heritage Beach in the district of East End.
“This is about more than just infrastructure; it’s about honouring where we come from,” said Johany “Jay” Ebanks, minister for Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development. “We believe food security begins at home, and what better place to start than where it all began — at sea. By building a stronger, more resilient dock, individuals and families can continue the traditions of our forefathers while benefiting from improved access and safety.”
The original dock at the Heritage Park location was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Grace in 2021 and later rendered completely unusable following Hurricane Beryl in 2024.
A press release from the ministry about the new dock added that, “For generations, Caymanians have relied on these docks for personal and commercial use, particularly in relation to fishing, transportation, and the sharing of our island’s seafaring traditions.”
“The construction efforts are a commitment to preserving that legacy for future generations,” and forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to enhance public access to coastal facilities.
Fellow Cabinet Minister Isaac Rankine, the representative for the district of East End, said some of the funding for the new dock came through his ministry. “Shared visions and partnerships between the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture & Heritage and the Ministry of Planning, Lands, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure will ensure the success of projects like these. Embracing our past and planning for the future, demonstrates our commitment to our communities.”
