9 medals for Cayman in first two days of Island Games

In the first two days of competition in the 20th International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, Cayman athletes secured nine medals, including two gold.

Cayman’s 32-member-strong team is among 1,660 competitors from 24 islands who are taking part in a dozen sports throughout the week. The games, which are being held in Orkney for the first time, were officially declared open on Saturday by Princess Anne.

Gymnast Karthik Adapa has had an impressive start to the games, winning a total of five medals so far.

His performance on the parallel bars earned him a score of 9.450 and a gold medal in the final in that competition. He also won a silver medal for pommel and another silver for rings, as well as two bronze medals for the floor and high bar.

Another Cayman gymnast, Justin Spencer, earned a bronze medal for his performance on the pommel.

Cayman’s swimmers have also made it onto the medal roster, securing three medals.

Sierrah Broadbelt swam to a gold medal in the final of the women’s 100m butterfly race, with a time of 1:00.64, finishing ahead of Guernsey’s Orla Rabay and Orkney’s Eve Wood.

In the men’s 4x50m medley relay final, the Cayman team of James Allison, Daniel Kish, Will Sellars and Jack Clark-Terrell finished in third place, securing a bronze medal in their combined time of 1:43:09, behind the Isle of Man in first place and Jersey in second.

Kish also won another medal for Cayman, earning a bronze with his time of 2:04:18 in the men’s 200m butterfly.

The games will continue until Friday.

Cayman is competing in badminton, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, sailing and squash.
