Police have decided to lay charges against two drivers – a teenager and a 72-year-old man – involved in an evening rush-hour road-rage incident on Rex Crighton Boulevard in February.
In a brief statement issued on 13 Aug., the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said it was charging the 17-year-old with inconsiderate driving, and the older man with common assault.
“Both will be summonsed to court at a later date,” the RCIPS said.
The road-rage incident on 19 Feb. led to a public backlash that prompted Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton to issue a statement calling for calm, after police arrested the teen but not the 72-year-old.
Video footage of the confrontation between the two drivers, captured by passing motorists and posted on social media, appeared to show the older driver being the aggressor.
The footage showed the older man, who was driving a Tesla Cybertruck, opening the driver’s door of the teen’s SUV and confronting the young man, who remained seated in his vehicle. The teenager then appeared to defend himself and grab the other man in a headlock.
Police initially arrested the teen on suspicion of assault causing bodily harm “as a result of the facial injuries sustained by the other driver”, the RCIPS said in a statement at the time.
Inconsiderate driving is an offence under the Traffic Act and involves driving a vehicle “without care and attention, or without reasonable consideration of other persons”, and carries a maximum penalty upon conviction of a fine of $1,000 or imprisonment for six months, or both. If convicted, the court can also ban the driver from driving for up to 12 months.
Common assault, under the Penal Code, carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for one year.
