Former Health Services Authority surgeon Dr. Paul Anthony Taiganides will appear before the Grand Court to be tried for manslaughter next May.
Taiganides, 61, is accused of being responsible for the death of 29-year-old Travis Alexander Ebanks, who had been taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds on 21 Jan. last year. The surgeon faces a charge of manslaughter by an unlawful act or omission.
Appearing via video link overseas before Grand Court Justice Cheryll Richards on Friday, 26 Sept., Taiganides emphatically pleaded “not guilty” when the charge was put to him.
Asked if his client wished to undergo a jury or judge-alone trial, his lawyer, Greg Burke, told the judge that discussions on that with prosecutors were still ongoing and he would inform the court later of the decision.
He said he estimated the trial would last three to four weeks.
He added that the case would involve calling experts, who would be available in May next year.
Richards set 5 May 2026 as the date to begin the trial, with a case management hearing to be held on 5 March.
She extended Taiganides’ bail until 5 May, and ordered him to appear in court in person on that date. In an earlier bail hearing, Taiganides, who no longer lives in Cayman, had been allowed to return to Greece, where he resides, on a $10,000 bond.
