Government is proposing greater penalties for poor driving by Cayman’s bus drivers with the chance for passengers to report them.
Speaking on Radio Cayman’s ‘For The Record’, Infrastructure Minister Jay Ebanks said that he was determined to improve the public bus network across Grand Cayman, which includes tackling bad driving.
Penalties coming
“I can tell you that there will be serious changes coming to the bus operators,” he told radio host Orrett Connor. “There will be a lot more penalties coming [and] we will look at putting a sticker on these buses so that people can report their driving.”
He said that his officers will be empowered to penalise bus drivers depending on their standard of driving, including how they pull off from a stop, how they stop, and when and where they stop.

Just that morning, he said, he had seen a bus driver stop by a sign which specifically said no stopping, to pick up passengers.
“If he can’t see that sign, then he shouldn’t be driving,” said Ebanks.
There will be a scorecard, he added, so if bus drivers were caught breaking the rules three times then they risked losing their licence. “Three strikes and you’re out,” he said.
Ebanks said that a government aim was that passengers should not have to wait more than 15 minutes for a bus and that the new depot planned for Savannah should help with the frequency of bus service, particularly to the eastern districts.
