Cayman Islands fishing is about to get some added publicity this week thanks to George Poveromo.
The TV personality is about to air his second 2012 episode of ‘George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing’ on the NBC Sports Network. Set to appear this Friday, 6 January (2.30pm) and Saturday, 7 January (11am), the show highlights Cayman fishing.
Cayman Islands Angling Club President Franklin Thompson states the TV programme is a major boost for the sport here.
“It’s great for Cayman fishing and it helps the tourism product as well,” Thompson said. “It’s in line with the goal of the angling club: to show people we have great fishing here. We are accessible to the US and the rest of the Caribbean and can attract larger sport fishing vessels.
“We see it as a win-win situation for everyone. Fishing can inject funds into the local economy as the fishermen who come here will rent cars, stay at hotels and eat at local restaurants.”
Titled ‘Cayman Islands Wahoo,’ the show focuses on Poveromo fishing in Cayman with noted marine artist Carey Chen. The duo, who were aboard the 65-foot boat ‘Cayman Time’ (which belongs to Chris Briggs), nabbed 18 wahoo with some reportedly weighing up to 57 pounds. They also caught four yellowfin tunas and had a blue marlin catch and release. The show also features wahoo trolling and noteworthy factors such as bait and boat speed.
Poveromo, 53, was here last November filming for the show. The South Florida native came down with cameramen Steve Miller and Kevin Tierney and stayed at the Comfort Inn Suites on Seven Mile Beach.
Thompson states the group was pleased with their visit.
“We set George up with one of the best crews on an excellent boat. He was very pleased with fishing here and he stated he never caught such an abundance of wahoo in a short amount of time.”
In addition to filming, Poveromo and his crew caught the awards ceremony of the All-Tackle fishing tournament, the last competition of 2011 put on by the angling club. Leon Dilbert earned $3,000 for catching a 38.6lb wahoo and a 26.2lb dolphin aboard Miss Nyah with captain Joel Francis. Shelly Ware of Run Things took home $2,000 and Carey Chen artwork for a 28.4lb dolphin. Vaughn Smith of Miss Nicole earned $1,000 for a 32.8lb wahoo and Andrew Schirn of Deep Thought won a rod and reel combo for a 24lb dolphin.
The first tournament of 2012 will be the Barcadere Classic 21-22 January. An angling club sanctioned event, the competition is expected to see fishing take place around Grand Cayman’s waters with weigh-in at the Barcadere Marina in George Town.
Thompson states there are plans to bring Poveromo back.
“George had a very successful trip and we were working over a year to get him down here. He had changed TV stations and had scheduling to work out.
“We definitely look forward to bringing him down this year. We’re trying to see what species he wants to show. What he fishes for here depends on what he fishes for elsewhere. For example he can’t do a whole season about just wahoo fishing.”
