Pizza man targeted in failed robbery

An armed man attempted to rob a pizza delivery driver Tuesday night in Newlands, according to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

It was the second such attack on a delivery driver this month.

The RCIPS report on the incident – which occurred around 9.30pm Tuesday – indicated the pizza man went to a wrong address on Candover Street in North Sound Estates.

After being told no one at the home asked for a pizza delivery, police said the man returned to his car where he was approached by a gunman.

Police said the suspect pointed his gun at the delivery man’s face and demanded money. The pizza man ran screaming, ducking around his vehicle to avoid his attacker and went back to the house he attempted to make the delivery at just moments before.

The suspect ran off into the bush without taking any money from the driver, police said.

No shots were fired in the attempted robbery and the delivery man was not injured, police said.

Anyone with information about this attack is asked to contact the Bodden Town Police Station at 949-2240 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

Tuesday’s robbery follows one that occurred in Prospect late Friday, 6 January, where police said a group of men attacked a delivery driver as he approached a home on Victory Avenue.

In that attack, police said the driver was struck from behind and had his wallet and other items taken from him.

  1. So, your solution to our problem is that Pizza Delivery Men must carry guns!? Maybe we should deal with the real problem and ask RCIPS to do what is needed to clean up this island and get rid of the guns. Larger countries than ours can live a gun free life. I, for one, do not want to live in a coutry that requires me to carry a hand gun to feel safe!

  2. These are very sound, sensible comments.

It has to be obvious that major societal responsibility is being abandoned or has been abandoned here, for quite some time now…the issue of the criminals freely pointing guns in innocent civilians faces is only one side of the equation; some of the others seem to be either non-mentionable or even taboo, based on how much press coverage or government attention that they get.

    AND THERE LIES YOUR PROBLEM.

Cayman’s unique brand of corruption seems to have pervaded every single facet of society to such an extent that, even in the face of total self-destruction, this corruption has rendered Cayman’s society totally paralysed in doing anything to save itself.

No…arming an entire citizenry would only be another proof of abject failure to control the destructive elements within Cayman’s society; by the time the shooting smoke blew over, there would be no one left standing.

But…there is absolutely no excuse for the British and Caymanian Governments to not use their military and police authority to bring this situation under control in the way that most other responsible countries have done, including Britain in homeland soil.

So now, the homes of police officers can be attacked with impunity ? Does that not indicate that their lives are now under threat ?

All civilians, or most, have had minor issues with police at some time in their lives but to attack the institutions of law and order in any country is to tear down the very fabric of a cohesive, functional society, and replace it with chaos and anarchy.

With the Governments of both Britain and the Cayman Islands sitting completely silent and unconcerned in the face of this dire situation speaks of dark, unmentionable issues concerning the Cayman Islands, of which its citizens should be very aware.

Whether fear is the issue why Cayman’s citizens are meekly accepting the disintegration of their society around them is a very worrying factor indeed.

That very fear will lead to their ultimate destruction if they are not careful.

  3. really voice?! There are other countries that live without guns?! Name them!

Name me one country that does not have criminal gun violence?!

(I will save you the research, all countries have gun violence)

There are only two types of countries. One’s that allow their citizens the right to defend themselves. And countries that do not allow their citizens to defend themselves.

Then ask yourself another question. If you are being held up, or your home broken into.

Do you want the criminal to decide if you live or die. Or do you want to at least be able to decide that fate for yourself. (just take a minute out of your day and imagine someone with a gun to your head. Is hoping he doesn’t kill you, good enough for you. Or would you want someone that is around, able to give you a better chance than you got, by shooting this person)

Because when seconds count. the police are only minutes away. Even in the best of circumstances.

you might not like guns, or gun ownership. fine…don’t get one. But should your morals dictate how others should protect themselves?

You might not like violence, and it’s the last thing you want to see or do. But violence doesn’t come towards you, with polite intentions or asks for permission.

But what the UK has done, is allowed the offender the right to take your life, and the legal aspect is. They hope that jail is a deterrent to stop the offender from taking your life during a crime. When obviously it’s not. (have you not seen the murder’s in the papers lately?) And the reality is, you do not have a choice. So guess you like communism. Because that is what your are supporting. The governments right to say (you are not allowed to protect yourself, we would sooner see you dead, and then deal with the offender after the fact. Than allow you to protect yourself).

But then ask this final question to yourself. Are members of the LA allowed to have firearms. Then reread this entire diatribe again, you might change your mind. Because if it’s good enough for some members of the government. Why isn’t it good enough for you? Or do you like them having double standards, because you don’t have the freedoms they have?

  4. After you research the countries that live in a world without gun crime, then research the level of crimes that are gun related in countries that allow you to protect yourself.

By making them legal to regular citizens you are making them more available to the wrong people.

  5. Voice/Bubba

IMO, you’re both right…from different sides of the same coin.

I can elaborate on my own comments a little more in context to yours, and we’ll all have made a valuable contribution to this vexing debate.

Not even in Britain, are the things that are happening on Grand Cayman, happening without stern government and police responses.

Every country has legal and illegal firearms in its society; a firearms-free world is a fantasy that some people would like to believe can exist but they have more chance of flying themselves to the moon in a ballon, than that ever becoming a reality but…

Not even in some of the world’s most civilised countries where firearms are legal and normal, are armed gangters allowed to roam and threaten the entire society without those countries governments fighting fire with fire; firearm with firearm.

I understand Voice’s point of view that he/she should not have to carry a firearm in Cayman to feel safe because, in truth, a firearm does not make one safe, it only gives an chance of immediate response in one’s own defense and that chance is fraught with its own risks…safety is a much bigger issue than just merely owning and carrying a firearm.

At the same time, as Bubba points out…if he can have his, why can’t I ?

In this respect, my comments are saying that Cayman’s citizens like Voice should be protesting, rallying and getting petitions out to Cayman’s public on this issue of a lack of both the Cayman and British Govts taking the necessary steps to bring this society-destroying violence under control NOW.

A limited military presence targeted at these shooters will get the job done; as well as a stern look at some of the personnell within the ranks of the RCIPS; I am convinced that some of the shooters in Cayman are operating with help and support from some members of the RCIPS, or at least, complicity in looking the other way when their street associates and friends are up to no good.

There is a corrupt element that has infiltrated the ranks of the RCIPS that need to be found and weeded out or this will only get worse, trust me.

  6. Actually if you research gun violence, and crime. You will get two statistics.

One from the pro gun group. And one from the anti gun group. I am sure you can guess which side says what.

Would you trust the FBI’s stats. Since they are non bias as you are going to get? Good.

    Here they are.

    More guns equal more crime?

FBI’s latest crime report, for the first half of 2009, shows America is a less violent place even though ownership of guns has surged. Deterrent effect may have a role, but others see no correlation.

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2009/1223/More-guns-equal-more-crime-Not-in-2009-FBI-crime-report-shows.

    http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2009/december/crimestats_122109

So…lets see CREDIBLE facts, that prove the FBI wrong.

Of course if you make guns legal more gun crimes will be commited. But if they made guns illegal. Those that could not use guns would kill in other ways. And those that don’t follow laws would use guns anyways.

But the fact remains. Legal gun ownership decreases crime. It’s like pointing at a turtle and saying look it’s a turtle. Of course its’ a turtle.

And of course everyone carrying a firearm that are law abiding citizens will naturally decrease crime. Because the criminals who own illegal firearms are less likely to pull them out for fear of being shot dead by every legal citizen carrying guns.

Right now in cayman, those criminals aren’t worried about being shot at all. So they wave those guns, like a statement.

And it’s up to them if you live or die. Because the government says you aren’t smart enough, or responsible enough to defend yourself.

But as I have said before. Look into the facts if LA members have the right to own a firearm. And ask yourself why you are not.

  7. Voice…

Please, for the sake of your own sanity, come out of your fantasy world !

Name us one country on this entire planet earth where crimes are not committed with guns and by that I mean where at least one crime or one person murdered, at the point of a gun.

If you cannot do this, your argument holds absolutely no value and is a pure figment of your own imagination and nothing else.

And I am 200% sure that you can’t, without creating your own imaginary country (Utopia?)that does not exist on any map of our now-known world.

You do this debate no service by creating your own fantasy facts to back up an unrealistic view of what is a very real and dangerous problem for Cayman’s society at this time.

If you actually acknowledge the problem that exists, you might be able to offer some suggestion towards its solution.

  8. i’m amazed at the pro gun lobby here. Go on let the public carry guns for self defence and watch the crime increase ten fold. Stop looking towards the social and economic mess that is the USA for guidance.
