The Lady Wolves basketball team seem back on track.
After a lackluster start to the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national women’s league, the Wolves responded. The black and green side took down the Island Heritage Silver Mist 58-50 at the association court off Eastern Avenue.
With last Thursday’s victory, the Lady Wolves are 1-1 and third in the standings. A notable contributor to the win was veteran Beneica Thompson, who states there is room for improvement.
“The game went well but we got to work as a team,” Thompson said. “We suffered from a lack of fitness too. We did not have a full squad in the first game. As we play together we’ll improve. We will rebound and win the championship.”
The Lady Wolves had a fast start to the game behind key players Cassianne Lawrence and Theresa Hamil. However the Silver Mist responded with multi-sport star Scimone Campbell and netballer Tishelle Logan. Eventually, Eckerd McField would coach the Lady Wolves to victory past Daniel Augustine’s Silver Mist.
Both squads have an interesting group of players that are no strangers to local sports. The Lady Wolves have new additions like flag footballers Kathy Miller and Tamika Byrd. Meanwhile Island Heritage (who are a new-look version of the Silver Bullets) sport the likes of Katherine Maw and Sophia Foster. Island Heritage now play on Thursday, 9 February while the Lady Wolves are off until next Thursday, 16 February.
Thompson, who excels in other sports like flag football, states her side now has the ability to win it all.
“Now we got a point guard and it will work better. I’m playing power forward, my natural position and I was shooting guard and small forward (in the season opener). We have a full season now and I don’t see us losing. With practice and teamwork, we’re good to go. We will be going for trophies and the championship.”
