Christina drives Welly’s forward

Welly’s Cool Spot are a young team at the top of women’s basketball.

Welly’s cooled off the Dominos Lady Heels 52-49 last Thursday at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association court off Eastern Avenue. With the victory Welly’s are 2-0 atop the national women’s league, ahead of the 1-1 Lady Heels.

A number of players, who recently gained props in the Under-19 league, stepped up for Welly’s. Chloe Powery had a good showing on both ends, April Ebanks had the game-winning free-throws and Christina McLean kept her side in it throughout the fourth quarter.

McLean, 18, states the victory is proof of the team’s character.

“It feels good as Dominos are like the top team,” McLean said. “They have a lot of experienced people and height over us. We worked as a team, put our hearts into it and gave our best.”

Thursday’s contest was a tight affair that came down to the final quarter. Dominos, behind coaches Collin Anglin and Bong Blancaflor, had chances to put the game away behind Joanne Remillard, Kamilla Nagy and Courtisha Ebanks. However assistant coach Billy Fenton got Welly’s young starlets to fight hard for the victory (for the record Redver Ebanks is the head coach but was off-island).

Both squads are in action again this Thursday, 9 February. At 6pm Dominos battle the Island Heritage Silver Mist while Welly’s tangle with the rebuilt defending champions Home Gas Flames at 7.30pm.

Interestingly, McLean was born in Jamaica and grew up in George Town, where she still lives. The sister of basketball prodigy Kimberly McLean, 16 and flag footballer Christsania McLean, 21, states her Welly’s squad has confidence going forward.

“We have developed a lot and worked together as a team. With our strength, we won our first two games. We’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
