Scholars double up and Elite celebrate

Cayman club football wrapped up over the weekend and for some locals it was just as intriguing as the ultra-exciting finale to the English Premiership.

Scholars International won the Premier League in dramatic fashion the weekend before having been behind Elite throughout the season. On Sunday they completed the double, winning the FA Cup through the only goal by top scorer Mark Ebanks, against George Town, who as worthy champs had won it the previous two years.

At least George Town have the consolation of hosting the second round of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championships next week.

In the earlier match at the TE McField Annex Academy made it another double, this time for coach Vigil Seymour. Academy beat Roma United 3-0 through two goals by Jonah Ebanks and Justin Rankine to condemn relegated Roma to the First Division next season. Academy jumped up to the Premier League, joining First Division champs North Side.

The previous day at the same venue, Academy Under-15s started the perfect weekend for coach Seymour in the youth FA Cup final, beating constant rivals Cayman Athletic 1-0 thanks to a goal near the end by Josh Hew. The game was tinged with controversy though because early on, Cayman Athletic’s outstanding player, Joshewa Frederick, was given a straight red card for a high tackle. Athletic usually beat Academy at youth level but Frederick’s sending off tipped the balance in Academy’s favour.

Saturday’s evening match was the women’s FA Cup final between Elite and Scholars International. Shanelle Frederick stole the show for Elite, scoring all three goals in the 3-0 win, including a twice taken penalty. Frederick is off to FC Indiana soon to complete her academic education and to also learn how to become a top pro with one of America’s most celebrated club teams.
