Dom secures Fidelity hat-trick

Dominic Corbin may not have quite made the grade to play for his beloved Manchester United but at least the former semi-pro footballer is a champion runner now having won all three races in the Fidelity Fun Run series. So maybe Olympic 5,000m gold could one day be his!

The Fidelity runs are an annual series of two mile distance held on successive Saturday mornings in September. It helps ease everyone back into active sport after the summer break and for many it is the start of their preparations for the Cayman Triathlon in November and Cayman Marathon a month later.

Well over 300 walkers and runners took part in the series which concluded on Saturday.

Corbin’s total time was 31 minutes 4 seconds, just ahead of Marius Acker, last year’s overall winner who completed the three in 31:10.

Tiffany Cole was the first female finisher of the series with a total time of 40 minutes 46 seconds although Laura Knox and Dee-an Foster finished ahead of her in the final race. Rodger Yeomans aided by his dog Roxy won the pet division and Neal Coleman won the strollers division.

Corbin was pleasantly surprised at his victory. “It genuinely feels amazing,” he said. “I had no expectation of even placing when entering the race. I spoke to my girlfriend Holly before entering and said that I may finish in the top five if I’m lucky, so actually winning all three feels great.”

Triathlon champ Acker usually wins this series but he is faster over longer distances. The second Fidelity race was so close they were timed the same although Corbin actually finished first. It was easily the fastest and hardest for Corbin.

Having mastered Acker in the previous two, what tactics did he use in the last one? “I would love to say I used tactics, but I just tried not to lose.”

As he waits patiently for a call from Alex Ferguson to shore up the leaky United defence, Corbin, 23, will keep himself busy in other Cayman Islands road races.

“I’ll be running most of the five kilometre races on Island now as they are a great way to keep fit and help out local causes. So next race will be this Saturday at the RBC Children’s Cancer 5k.”

At 6ft 6ins tall there is scope for him to take up the triathlon. “At the moment I wouldn’t do one, but I may give it a go one day for fun.”

Acker said: “Dom had another good run on Saturday. It was a more tactical race which is what I planned for. I was happy to let him do some of the running on the second mile which he did not do in the first two.

“It will be good to see him again in the To Hell and Back 10K coming up in Pirates’ Week.” But not if the call from Old Trafford comes first.
